We will learn how we can use to magnetometer to find north, and use the Microbit&#8217;s direction in our projects.<\/p>\n<p>A magnetometer is a device that measures magnetic fields around a device.<\/p>\n<p>Magnetometers are commonly used for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Electronic compasses &#8211; detecting the earths magnetic field<\/li>\n<li>Detecting buried or hidden metal objects, such as buried treasure or land mines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Magnetic fields<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-182\" src=\"https:\/\/learnlearn.uk\/microbit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/06\/512px-Earths_magnetic_field_schematic.svg_.png\" alt=\"512px-Earth's_magnetic_field,_schematic.svg\" width=\"290\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/learnlearn.uk\/microbit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/06\/512px-Earths_magnetic_field_schematic.svg_.png 512w, https:\/\/learnlearn.uk\/microbit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/06\/512px-Earths_magnetic_field_schematic.svg_-300x250.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Magnetic fields are the areas of magnetic attraction and repulsion that are exerted by magnetically charged objects.<\/p>\n<p>Magnetic fields attempt to line up magnetically charged objects along the line of magnetic field lines. The earth is has a huge magnetic field that runs south to north roughly in line with our south and north poles, and so the magnet in a compass will always try to align itself south to north.<\/p>\n<p>The magnetometer inside of the BBC can detect these magnetic field lines and so can be used as an electronic compass.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"arconix-pane pane-Gettingstarted\">\n<h3>Calibrating the Magnetometer<\/h3>\n<p>Each time you turn on the Microbit it will ask you to calibrate the compass.
