They contain one of two types of data:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>audio data, readable by a CD player or a computer up to 70 minutes long<\/li>\n<li>binary data, readable by a computer , up to 700MB<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Uses<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Music Albums<\/li>\n<li>Photo and documents backup<\/li>\n<li>Device driver &amp; software shipped with hardware<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Advantages<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cheap per MB storage<\/li>\n<li>Easy and cheap to ship via the mail<\/li>\n<li>Wide compatibility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Disadvantages<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not suitable for high resolution image \/ video backup<\/li>\n<li>Can&#8217;t store a full Movie on it<\/li>\n<li>Easy to scratch \/ break<\/li>\n<li>Slow read \/ write speed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/one-third]<\/p>\n<h2>Digital Versatile Discs &#8211; DVDs<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1788\" src=\"https:\/\/learnlearn.uk\/igcseict\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/dvd-300x152.png\" alt=\"dvd\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/learnlearn.uk\/igcseict\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/dvd-300x152.png 300w, https:\/\/learnlearn.uk\/igcseict\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/dvd.png 315w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>DVDs were introduced to fill the demand for higher capacity storage than was available using CDs.<\/p>\n<p>They use a narrower laser beam, which allows more storage capacity than a CD.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Uses<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Feature length films (Full movies)<\/li>\n<li>Operating System storage<\/li>\n<li>Larger modern games \/ software<\/li>\n<li>Image and Video file backup<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Advantages<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Larger storage capacity than CDs<\/li>\n<li>Can store full standard quality movies<\/li>\n<li>Faster R\/W speeds than CDs<\/li>\n<li>Very cheap per MB storage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Disadvantages<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can storage HD \/ 3D Movies<\/li>\n<li>Can&#8217;t do a full Hard Drive backups<\/li>\n<li>Can be scratched \/ broken easily<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div><h2 class=\"tabtitle\">Blu-ray<\/h2>\n<div class=\"tabcontent\">\n\n<h2>Blu-ray<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_1789\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1789\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1789 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/learnlearn.uk\/igcseict\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/Blu_ray_logo-300x162.png?_t=1618787594\" alt=\"Blu_ray_logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/learnlearn.uk\/igcseict\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/Blu_ray_logo-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/learnlearn.uk\/igcseict\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/Blu_ray_logo-768x415.png 768w, https:\/\/learnlearn.uk\/igcseict\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/Blu_ray_logo-1024x553.png 1024w, https:\/\/learnlearn.uk\/igcseict\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/Blu_ray_logo.png 1712w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1789\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blue ray discs allow cheap distribution of HD videos and games, though they are largely being replaced by cloud streaming.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As games began to include larger open world environments and televisions increased their resolutions, there developed and increasing demand for larger storage capacity optical devices, and as a result the Blue-ray disc was invented.<\/p>\n<p>Uses<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3D and Full HD Movie Storage<\/li>\n<li>Games storage for high end games consoles<\/li>\n<li>HD movie and image backup<\/li>\n<li>Hard Drive backup<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Advantages<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only Optical disc large enough for hard drive backups<\/li>\n<li>Faster R\/W speed than DVD\/CD<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Disadvantages<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Still not widely supported by many computers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div><h2 class=\"tabtitle\">Activity<\/h2>\n<div class=\"tabcontent\">\n\n<h2><strong>Activity &#8211;
