Specialist knowledge is required to port of from legacy programming languages such as Cobol. Where organisations used specialist manufacturing or scientific equipment this equipment may only function with specific hardware or only be supported be specific operating systems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/04\/08\/business\/coronavirus-cobol-programmers-new-jersey-trnd\/index.html\">https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/04\/08\/business\/coronavirus-cobol-programmers-new-jersey-trnd\/index.html<\/a><\/p>\n\n<\/div><h2 class=\"tabtitle\">Data<\/h2>\n<div class=\"tabcontent\">\n\n<p><strong>Data Compatibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When moving data from an old system, or systems, to\u00a0 a new system, data compatibility issues need to be addressed.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Different Units of measurements<\/li>\n<li>Different date formats<\/li>\n<li>Different time zones<\/li>\n<li>Address formats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All the existing data that is stored needs to be analyzed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simscale.com\/blog\/nasa-mars-climate-orbiter-metric\/#:~:text=In%20September%20of%201999%2C%20after,%2C%20i.e.%2C%20the%20metric%20units!\">Crashed Mars Lander<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div><h2 class=\"tabtitle\">Merger Issues<\/h2>\n<div class=\"tabcontent\">\n\n<h3>Merger Issues<\/h3>\n<p>When two businesses merge together, or one acquires the other, then the systems need to be merged in some manner. This may mean replacing the hardware and software in either or both organisations.<\/p>\n<p>There are 4 ways in which this can be handled<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep one system and replace the other<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the simplest solution but may result in serious consequences for side of the business being replaced, and may affect the functionality of the business<\/p>\n<p><strong>Create a whole new system<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This means choosing which aspects to keep and which to ditch, depending on required functionality and available development resources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Selecting elements of the existing system and combine them<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One possibility for complex systems is to cherry-pick the best elements of each of the systems.
