How GPS Works

GPS systems work by triangulating signals from at least three satellites to determine the receiver’s position through a process called trilateration.

Each satellite continually broadcasts its position and the precise time the signal was transmitted. The receiver uses this information to calculate the distance to each satellite based on the time it took for the signals to arrive.

By knowing the exact locations of at least three satellites and their distances from the receiver, the receiver can determine its own position in three-dimensional space.
