Embedded computers use usually micro-controller devices, such as the Raspberry Pi or Arduino, and are often used &#8216;headless&#8217; &#8211; the device operates without a monitor \/ mouse \/ keyboard. Embedded systems usually come with operating systems pre-installed, often on ROM memory chips, rather than HDD Drives.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-456\" src=\"https:\/\/learnlearn.uk\/gcsecs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/01\/ardiuno.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"182\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-457\" src=\"https:\/\/learnlearn.uk\/gcsecs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/01\/embedded-systems-ocr-gcse.jpg\" alt=\"embedded systems ocr gcse\" width=\"277\" height=\"182\" \/><\/p>\n\n<\/div><h2 class=\"tabtitle\">Characteristics<\/h2>\n<div class=\"tabcontent\">\n\n<h3>Characteristics of embedded systems<\/h3>\n<p>Embedded systems are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Used to perform a single functions within a larger device.<\/li>\n<li>Usually low power<\/li>\n<li>low processor speed devices.<\/li>\n<li>Limited resources (e.g. RAM)<\/li>\n<li>Generally do not have a separate Hard Drive but rely solely on Flash Memory.<\/li>\n<li>Mass produced, low cost per device.<\/li>\n<li>Smaller than a normal computer.<\/li>\n<li>Large operating temperature ranges.<\/li>\n<li>More rugged than general purpose computers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div><h2 class=\"tabtitle\">Smart Homes<\/h2>\n<div class=\"tabcontent\">\n\n<div class=\"arconix-column-two-thirds\">\n<h3>Smart Homes<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Smart Home embedded devices<\/li>\n<li>Smart homes contain a number of embedded systems.<\/li>\n<li>Smart Assistants<\/li>\n<li>Smart Security systems<\/li>\n<li>Smart Heating<\/li>\n<li>Smart Tvs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What makes all these devices &#8216;smart&#8217; is that they:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have a computer inside them<\/li>\n<li>Are usually connected to the internet or LAN network.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"arconix-column-one-third\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/learnlearn.uk\/gcsecs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/01\/smart-home.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-635\" src=\"https:\/\/learnlearn.uk\/gcsecs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/01\/smart-home-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div><h2 class=\"tabtitle\">Weather<\/h2>\n<div class=\"tabcontent\">\n\n<div class=\"arconix-column-two-thirds\">\n<h3>Weather Stations<\/h3>\n<p>A popular use of embedded systems is in weather systems. Modern weather modelling and forecasting systems require huge amounts of data from all over the world to make their predictions. Instead the operating system is installed on a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">ROM chip<\/span> in the form of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">firmware<\/span>.\u00a0 Since embedded devices are usually single purpose devices, new software or software updates usually do not need to be installed.
