Many of the participants will have never experienced hiking and camping before, and this creates a real headache\u00a0for parents:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>how am I supposed to be able to afford\u00a0to buy all this equipment for my child for a 2 day expedition when they might never use it again?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well&#8230;the \u00a0best advice\u00a0is don&#8217;t!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tips to reduce the cost<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"arconix-list\" data-arconix-icon=\"fa-chevron-circle-right\" data-arconix-color=\"black\">\n<ul>\n<li>Beg, steal &amp; borrow *<\/li>\n<li>Christmas \/ birthday gifts<\/li>\n<li>Buy used kit<\/li>\n<li>Buy Army surplus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>MOD surplus kit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Few kids want to wear full camo gear on their expedition, looking like a walking tree, but army surplus gear has a number of real advantages:<\/p>\n<div class=\"arconix-list\" data-arconix-icon=\"fa-chevron-circle-right\" data-arconix-color=\"black\">\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s built to last &#8211; tough, rip-stop material that can take the demands of barbed-wire fences and accidental detours through forests.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s got all the tech &#8211; Army waterproofs from that last 15 years are almost all Goretex.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s cheap. You can high quality gear for the price of cheap stuff<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s less likely to go walkies. Unlike \u00a3200 North Face jackets, no-one wants to steal army gear!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>This tip is especially useful for waterproof trousers. There is nothing that prepares you better for a full day&#8217;s walking than a warm, comfortable night&#8217;s rest. They offer both excellent thermal insulation, together with some protection from bumps. They are also the most robust mattres, able to take more abuse than other more expensive options.<\/p>\n<h4>Inflatable mattress<\/h4>\n<p>Inflatable hiking mattresses offer both excellent insulation, as well as brilliant protection from stones and twigs.
