They are not to be confused with devices that you put physical components on ( such as paper in a printer). The device must be putting data in from a physical format into a digital format.<\/p>\n<p>They come in two forms:<\/p>\n<div class=\"arconix-list\" data-arconix-icon=\"fa-chevron-circle-right\" data-arconix-color=\"black\">\n<ul>\n<li>Manual entry input devices<\/li>\n<li>Direct data entry systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Manual entry<\/p>\n<p>devices require the user to enter data manually, such as a keyboard or a mouse.<\/p>\n<p>Direct data entry systems allow data to be entered semi or fully automatically. These are usually used in specialist systems, such as retail or industrial systems.<\/p>\n<p>Direct entry devices will be covered in a separate lesson, <a href=\"http:\/\/learnlearn.uk\/igcseict\/2-input-and-output-devices\/2-2-direct-data-entry-and-associated-devices\/direct-entry-devices\/\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"arconix-box arconix-box-gray\"><i class='fa fa-2x pull-left fa-info'><\/i><div class=\"arconix-box-content\">\n<p><strong>Warning!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students often mis-categorise devices such as CDs, USB pens, SD Cards etc, as input devices. Input devices and their uses.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div><\/p>\n\n<\/div><h2 class=\"tabtitle\">Text<\/h2>\n<div class=\"tabcontent\">\n\n<div class=\"arconix-column-two-thirds\">\n<h3>Text input Devices<\/h3>\n<p>Text input devices usually come in the form of either keyboards or numeric keypads.<\/p>\n<p>Keyboards are an incredibly efficient method for inputting text data in to computer system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advantages<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fast accurate input &#8211; trained typists can type at over 70 words per minute.<\/li>\n<li>Full keyboards can be used for gaming as well as work<\/li>\n<li>Numeric Keypads allow numeric text input only and are usually used for specific applications (ATM machines, tills)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Disadvantages<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Full size keyboards are larger than many modern computer systems ( tablets, laptops and phones) so aren&#8217;t very portable<\/li>\n<li>Extended use can cause repetitive strain injury.<\/li>\n<li>Can&#8217;t be used by people with certain disabilities<\/li>\n<li>New users are very slow at typing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"arconix-column-one-third\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1399\" src=\"https:\/\/learnlearn.uk\/igcseict\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/numeric-keypad-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"numeric-keypad\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div><h2 class=\"tabtitle\">Position<\/h2>\n<div class=\"tabcontent\">\n\n<div class=\"arconix-column-two-thirds\">\n<h3>Position Input Devices<\/h3>\n<p>Position input devices are used to position a pointer(cursor) on a screen.<\/p>\n<h4>Mouse<\/h4>\n<p>The most common of form of position input device is a mouse. A laser and sensor in the base of the mouse is used to detect when the mouse moves across a surface and the movement is translated in a to movement on the screen. Mice allow for <strong>fast, high precision work<\/strong> and that is why they are popular with both professionals and \u00c2\u00a0pc gamers.<\/p>\n<h4>Tracker ball<\/h4>\n<p>Some people with limited arm movement<strong> find mice difficult or impossible to use<\/strong>, and so they often use a tracker-ball instead. With a tracker-ball the palm of the hand rests on the device and the ball is rotated by the fingers.<\/p>\n<h4>Touchpad<\/h4>\n<p>Many business people and students choose a laptop instead of a desktop pc because they are far more portable, but when used in confined spaces (e.g. on a bus \/ train) it isn&#8217;t practical to use a mouse. This means that almost all laptops are fitted with a touch-pad to serve as a substitute for a mouse. However this changed rapidly with the invention of smartphone and tablet computer systems. This has resulted in the sales high accuracy, low-latency (low lag) \u00c2\u00a0and cheap touch input devices that are now found in a wide variety of settings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advantages<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When combined with a GUI they are very easy and intuitive to use, with little or no training required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disadvantages<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They aren&#8217;t as accurate as a mouse pointer<\/li>\n<li>When in use the finger or hand blocks the user&#8217;s sight of the screen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Graphics Tablets<\/h4>\n<p>Graphics tablets are touch sensitive devices that combine the use of a tablet and stylus. The are especially useful in business where an electronic backup of a signed document is required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advantages<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They are highly accurate<\/p>\n<p>Often include &#8216;scan-to-email&#8217; functionality so the scanned document can be directed sent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disadvantages<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They are bulky &#8211; not portable<\/li>\n<li>Can only scan flat documents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Digital Cameras<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Digital cameras have completely changed the photography industry. Photography used to be a slow, expensive and unpredictable process. The invention of the digital camera has led to a massive shirt, not only in how photos are taken and processed, but the purpose of photography itself. For the &#8216;Instagram&#8217; generation photos have become a throwaway product.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advantages<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"arconix-list\" data-arconix-icon=\"fa-chevron-circle-right\" data-arconix-color=\"black\">\n<ul>\n<li>Photos can be accurately previewed before they are taken and instantly reviewed afterwards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Disadvantages<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"arconix-list\" data-arconix-icon=\"fa-chevron-circle-right\" data-arconix-color=\"black\">\n<ul>\n<li>Modern digital cameras require a massive amount of storage space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h4><strong>Webcams<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>With the development of Voice-over-internet-protocol (VOIP) technology there came a massive drive to put a webcam on the front of every laptop.
